Chinese theme

A chinese theme mural with real chinese writing.
This is my first pegoda, bridge, chinese figures etc… I had fun painting this theme and tried to include some of the style of chinese painting, if you can see my perspective is not perfect either it’s on purpose, I gave it that chinese wall paper flat feel. the water and pebbles and stones are painted in asian style.
When I take on a new subject for a mural I put together a reference folder full of ideas and images which I use while working. I also used real chinese translation for the banners for the ‘peking duck’ restaurant and ‘chinese lantern’ sign, the other one is my clients name, my signature is in chinese too!

Custom your back splash switch plates, it makes such a difference! I try and have the stone flow through the plates for continuity. they look like mini paintings and especially make your outlets disappear.
you can find other examples of these in faux wood, faux marble and stone and tile.

Refurbish old kitchen cabinets

These cabinets were a little run down, chipped varnish and water damages around the sink. We figured out a fun technique to brighten them up, give a good coat of new paint, faux and varnish, This was a three stage process, did not require stripping them or heavy sanding because the first finish was used as a base and added to the look.
This style could be done in any color and only takes a few days to create without having the turn your kitchen upside down!

Metallic patina with reptile like textured bubbles, the walls are dark silver on the bottom and lighter pearl towards the top, the bubbles getting smaller towards the top, bringing the feeling of openness and lightness to the room in this glamorous setting.
This project was a collaboration with award wining designer Victoria Dunivin, we have worked together for more then 10 years now. This was a completed remodel a bubbly bundle of fun.

Faking Venetian Plaster with Glazes in Fairbanks Ranch

Faux means fake, the idea is to get a look usually created with glazes that resembles the real thing, that is what a master of faux finishes does. It is a cost effective way to get the look without paying through the roof! Sometimes it is used because an area could not work, for instance wall paper in a shower, fake the wall paper instead with paint.

Let’s Gold Leaf San Diego!

Sunday, January 27th, 2013 10:33 pm | by vviannay

Gold leafing is a great way to enhance a space, bring sparkle to a dark corner, makes your face glow above a dining table or transformed a dull piece of furniture. It definitely adds a touch of glam to a decor. Gilding is done with very thin square leaves of silver, copper or gold applied by hand one after the other. You use a tacky glue for them to stick and the trick is to apply them perfectly square onto a flat surface or distresses depending on the look you are going for. Please make sure you go to the gold leafing page to see examples of before and after pictures of how it can transform your space of a piece of furniture.

Happy New Year

I started my year at the annual interior design fair ‘Maison et Objet’ in Paris. To see the next fashion, what is the next big thing and the new palette of colors. I have to admit that I did not see anything that blew me away as far as product design. The next colors are splashes of duck greens and blues, electric yellow with grays and purple and mauves are still dominating. I decided to look into the past and see old houses like Zuber & Cie a fabric and walls paper companies founded in 1797, 8 years after the french revolution. They have 150,000 hand carved copper plates still used today to make relief wall paper. They are old but they have adapted the old methods using more modern fabrics. also to my surprise there is no minimum order and you can ask for specific colors. They also print all the wooden block wall paper, each theme are about 15 meters, again you do not have to get the whole design. Each theme is made of about 4000 wooden blocks of all shapes and sizes. Once a year they produce 50 of the same theme and they rotate the theme every 15 years. You may have to wait 8 years to get the one you want! I believe Jackie Kennedy was a fan and had their wallpaper installed at the white house.
Close up the wall paper reminded me of paint by numbers, it is the colors that make it absolutely charming, these murals can be reproduced by a mural artist like myself and can redo the technique and feel of these murals using brushes for a lot less sweat and chunk of change. I figured an original Zuber & Cie wallpaper mural would run around $40,000 and up for a 12 x 12 feet room and you may have to wait quite a while!

I have been designing and silkscreening custom fabric since 2007 in my San Diego art studio. Working with interiors designer has helped me venture in topic I would never thought I would get into. One day I was approached to design and create custom window treatment and 6 years later I expanded quite a bit. I have designed and printed upholstery to apparel fabrics. I have sold my scarves and bag designs at costco, fab.com, worked with fashion designers and now have a dish towel and apron collection. when you start thinking about it fabric is everywhere. We use it on a daily basis, there is so much to be done!
Check my shop to see the collection
